Cess collected for construction workers too low for their welfare

A PIL has been filed in SC saying that the cess collected from construction companies, which is meant to pay for such workers’ welfare, is abysmally low

Important point: According to the Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Cess Act, 1996, a 1% cess is to be levied and collected on all types of construction activities, whether by government, PSUs or private players
